Victorian schools directed to remind parents fees are voluntary

A principals' association warns public schools will suffer financially after being ordered to clarify that parental contributions are entirely voluntary.

Victorian state schools have been instructed by the education department to explicitly remind parents that public education is free and that financial contributions are strictly voluntary.

According to a wire report, the directive has raised immediate concerns among school administrators. A prominent principals' association has warned that the move will leave public schools worse off by discouraging families from making discretionary payments.

Under existing Victorian guidelines, parent contributions are requested by schools to help fund elective subject materials, extra classroom resources, and grounds maintenance. While these payments have technically always been voluntary, schools are now under strict orders to communicate this fact clearly and repeatedly to their local communities.

The principals' association argues that the new department directive could lead to a significant drop in contributions from families who otherwise have the financial capacity to pay. Administrators fear that because state funding does not cover the full cost of the extracurricular programs and advanced equipment currently offered, any reduction in voluntary contributions will directly impact student services.

It remains unclear exactly how many schools are heavily reliant on these parent contributions to maintain their current standard of facilities, as the education department has not provided a breakdown of these figures. The department has also not specified what compliance measures will be introduced to ensure schools are adhering to the new messaging guidelines.

Observers will be watching to see if the state government offers any compensatory funding to schools that experience a drop in voluntary contributions.
