Royal Children's Hospital Beds to Sit Empty Without Staff Funding
A $50 million expansion of Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital will leave 20 new beds unused due to a lack of staffing funds.
A major expansion at Victoria's primary paediatric facility will see dozens of new beds remain empty due to a lack of operational funding. The 50 million dollar upgrade at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne is nearing completion, but 20 new beds will not be put into service because no money has been allocated to hire the necessary medical staff.
According to reporting in a wire service dispatch, sources within the healthcare sector confirmed the brand-new beds will sit idle despite the imminent handover of the physical wards. While the capital works project has successfully delivered the infrastructure, the operational budget required to run the expanded facility has not been delivered to the hospital.
It remains unclear how long the beds will remain unstaffed, as state health officials have not yet announced any supplementary funding packages to address the gap. The exact number of doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals needed to safely operate the new 20-bed space has also not been publicly disclosed by the hospital or the government.
Similarly, it is not yet confirmed whether the hospital administration will attempt to internally reallocate existing staff from other wards to open a portion of the new space, or if the entire expansion area will remain completely closed to patients when work concludes.
