The Mildura State Emergency Service unit is lobbying the Victorian government for 1 million dollars in funding to upgrade its outdated regional headquarters. Volunteers at the facility currently face embarrassing conditions, including a lack of private change rooms.

According to a wire report, the local unit is advocating for urgent state funding to address significant deficits at the site. The current facilities require substantial modernisation to support the volunteer workforce, which services a large portion of Victoria's north-west.

The primary deficiencies at the Mildura headquarters include inadequate change rooms, which force volunteers to change clothes in front of colleagues. Additionally, the facility lacks modern training rooms and adequate office space to manage local emergency responses effectively.

Local advocates argue that the lack of privacy and substandard infrastructure hamper recruitment and retention of volunteers, who are essential for regional emergency management. The proposed 1 million dollar funding package would be used to construct dedicated change areas, expand administrative offices, and build modern training facilities.

The Mildura unit represents a critical hub for emergency services in the region, regularly responding to storm damage, road accidents, and search operations. The current physical layout of the building restricts the unit's ability to host comprehensive training sessions and manage operations smoothly during peak emergency events.

While the Victorian government has previously committed funds to various emergency service facilities across the state, it has not yet confirmed whether the Mildura upgrade will be funded in the upcoming state budget.

It remains to be seen whether the Victorian government will commit the requested funding in the upcoming state budget.
