Foreign YouTuber uses AI to promote One Nation
An investigation has revealed how an overseas political commentator is using artificial intelligence to masquerade as an Australian online.
An investigation by ABC News Verify has revealed that an overseas political commentator is using artificial intelligence to masquerade as an Australian creator on YouTube. The channel has been using generative AI technology to promote the Pauline Hanson-led One Nation political party to thousands of online viewers.
According to the report, the foreign content creator employs sophisticated digital tools to generate realistic Australian-sounding voiceovers and other local persona elements. By presenting as a domestic commentator, the channel has managed to build a substantial audience of thousands of Australians, distributing videos that heavily endorse One Nation policies and narratives.
The revelations highlight growing concerns among cybersecurity and political analysts regarding the role of foreign actors using artificial intelligence to influence domestic Australian politics. These techniques allow creators based outside of the country to easily bypass traditional geographic barriers, creating highly localised and seemingly authentic content.
It remains unconfirmed whether the channel has any formal coordination with One Nation officials, or if the operator is acting entirely independently. It is also unclear exactly where the foreign creator is located, though the investigation confirmed the digital footprint originates outside of Australia. One Nation has not yet issued a formal response to the findings.
The case underscores the rising difficulty in policing digital campaign material as generative technology becomes cheaper and more accessible to international actors.
Observers will now be watching to see if the Australian Electoral Commission or federal security agencies launch an inquiry into the foreign-sourced political content.

Every story here is free to read. Only readers keep it that way.
We take no government money, run no paywall, and answer to nobody in Spring Street. That independence is paid for by a small number of readers, not the many who benefit from it. If just one in a hundred of today's readers gave $8 a month, our Victorian politics coverage would be funded for the year.
