Adelaide man arrested over alleged five million dollar NDIS fraud
Australian Federal Police have arrested an Adelaide man at the airport in relation to an alleged five million dollar disability scheme fraud.
Australian Federal Police have arrested an Adelaide man as he allegedly attempted to flee the country, making him the second person charged in connection with an alleged 5 million dollar National Disability Insurance Scheme fraud.
According to reporting by federal authorities and wire services, the arrest is the result of an ongoing investigation into a syndicate accused of systematically defrauding the scheme. The man was intercepted by officers at the international departures terminal of an Australian airport.
His arrest follows that of a 48 year old woman who was taken into custody in June. Police allege the pair were involved in a coordinated plot to submit dishonest claims to the National Disability Insurance Scheme, which supports Australians with significant and permanent disabilities.
Investigators have not yet released the identity of the arrested man or confirmed which airport he was detained at when attempting to board his flight. It is also unclear if further arrests are expected as the fraud investigation continues.
The Australian Federal Police have indicated that their investigation remains active, with officers continuing to examine financial records and digital evidence seized during recent search warrants. Authorities have repeatedly warned that they are actively targeting individuals who seek to exploit government support programs for personal gain.
The federal government has recently increased funding for joint taskforces designed to protect the integrity of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, following several high profile cases of alleged systematic fraud.
